17 April 2002 - 19 April 2002

Nine journalists from prominent
Indonesian media organizations have spent three
days at a workshop sponsored by the British
Embassy in Jakarta to explore the role of
the media in developing and explaining defence
and security policy. The workshop was organized
by the UK Consultant Public Administration International
(PAI) and forms part of the British Government's
initiative on Security Sector Reform. Speakers
included PAI's Director Bob Raitt, Professor
Chris Bellamy from Cranfield University and
the UK's National Defence Academy, formerly Defence
Correspondent of the Independent newspaper and
Lt. Gen Agus Widjojo, Vice-Chairman of
the MPR. The journalists were introduced to issues
of war reporting and the experience of many different
conflicts, and how to learn more about defence
and strategic issues as part of the role of a
free responsible media in a democracy.
