From an iconographic
perspectives:
A. The word Tri in Tri Hita Karana
is equal to there; hence its basic form may be represented
by a triangle. Analogy is observable to the symbol
of Tri Kona (utpeti/birth, stiti/life and pralina/death),
that is Sanggah Cukcuk or ‘sanggah penjor’
whose basic form is a triangle of equal sides.
B. From a technical technological
aspect, a triangle denotes rigidity, strength, balance
and capability to distribute pressure equally to
all sides. This matches the essence of Tri Hita
Karana concept, i.e. balance and harmony.
C. The elaboration of an equal-sided
triangle into a trident stems from the fact that
a trident represent the intersection of there major
concepts whose core occupies the mid-point.
D. The trident is the weapon of
Sambu the god who reigns over the northeast in the
representation of nine gods who rule the nine directions
(Dewqta Nawa Sangha). According to Hindu cosmology,
the northeast is the direction of the highest rank,
Utamaning Utama, where shrines or Besakih the mother
temple is to be located in line with the concept
of Padma Bhuwana.
- From a semiotic perspective:
A. The symbol has a somewhat ‘egocentric’
flavor, denoting that man is the axis of everything.
The basic assumption is that God and Nature have molded
the ‘balance’ and ‘harmony’
with natural laws, and man accounts for imbalance
or disharmony.
B. In universal term, the form of
the symbol illustrates the vertical relationship of
man with God and the horizontal one of man with his
fellow beings and the nature. This simultaneously
reflects the goal of Hindu adherents: Moksartam Jagadhita
ya ca iti Dharma, signifying pursuit of worldly happiness
and welfare (jagadhita) and union with God (moksa).
C. The form of the trident represents
the intersection of theological, sociological and
ecological dimensions of the THK concept and at once
positions the THK as the core essence.
D. The universal values of the THK
concept is reflected in PATRA TRISULA and can be creatively
actualized and implemented in spatial arrangement
as scared and profane aspects, spatial socio-cultural
aspect and territorial aspect.
• Denoting vertical relationship
with God and horizontal relationship with fellow beings
and the environment.
• Egocentric concept that holds man as the center
and cause of imbalance reflecting life in Hinduism:
Moksartham Jagadhita y ca iti Dharma.
